Ryan McLaren retires from first-class cricket

Cape Town - Former Proteas all-rounder Ryan McLaren has announced his retirement from first-class cricket with immediate effect.

McLaren, 35, confirmed the news on his Twitter account on Thursday.

"I have learned from many to know when it's the right time. The time has come for me to retire from first class cricket. I'm grateful to share a changeroom with some of the best our country has produced," he wrote.

"Words cannot describe how grateful I am for the support I have had from my wife, family, coaches and teammates both in SA and in county cricket. I have absolutely loved every part of what this game has taught me…time for some white ball fun now."

McLaren's final four-day match for the Knights was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to the poor outfield conditions in Willowmoore Park in Benoni.

McLaren has played two Tests, 54 ODIs and 12 T20Is for the Proteas from 2009 to 2014.

The all-rounder will remain part of the Knights' white-ball campaigns. The Knights play in the upcoming One Day Cup tournament, which gets underway on February 8.
