Proteas women opener Laura Wolvaardt and former Proteas all-rounder Rory Kleinveldt were some of the South African cricketers to attend this week's KFC Mini-Cricket Provincial Festival at Newlands and Boland Park.

Over 1000 kids attended the Western Province KFC Mini-Cricket Provincial Festival at the Newlands, while 825 kids from 40 schools at Boland Park.

The programme brings youngsters from across our diverse country together and not only introduces them to the wonderful game of cricket but also allows them to play and have fun.

Some of the stars included Cape Cobras players Ferisco Adams, Craig Alexander, Simon Khomari, Isaac Dikgale and Proteas women's Sinalo Jafta and Andrie Steyn.

Alexander, who was at Boland Park, stated that the initiative could inspire the next Kagiso Rabada.

"This is my third festival, two in North West and this is my first in Boland. KFC Mini-Cricket is important in getting to areas where other forms of cricket does not normally get to and see the talent that is out there," said Alexander.

I also get a lot out of a day like today. When I get here and see the smiles on their faces brings a smile to my face and brightens up my day watching kids having fun playing cricket.

"As a professional cricketer you never know what impression that you give to the youngsters, you could be influencing the next Kagiso Rabada, so it is very important for us to take part in the KFC Mini-Cricket Festivals."

The attending kids from the various schools are a part of the 124 000 kids from 6495 schools that take part in over 44 000 KFC Mini-Cricket matches around the country over the cricket season.

The KFC Mini-Cricket programme remains one of the most impactful and significant development programmes in the South African sporting landscape and goes far beyond the game of cricket.
