Proteas gear up for Women's T20 Super League at Newlands

Cape Town -  On Friday evening adjacent to the ongoing Cape Town Sevens, Cricket South Africa (CSA) launched their second edition of the Women's T20 Super League.

The T20 league is a strength versus strength domestic competition, which sees four teams battle it out in three days at the iconic Newlands.

The four teams are: The Coronation, the Countesses, the Starlights and the Thistles.

Other than it's inaugural tournament earlier this year, this edition of the Women's T20 Super League will see several of the Proteas stars take part - including national skipper Dane van Niekerk.

"It's quite exciting, it's been a long time coming for us... for me to be a part of the Super League in South Africa, I'm quite excited," Van Niekerk told Sport24 on Friday.

"There's a lot of talent around, obviously as a captain I've been out for a little bit so it'll be nice to see where everyone is at and the young stars coming through."

The competition sees two matches being played on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Newlands.

Van Niekerk wasn't too phased by the fast-paced cricket and admitted that they'll take anything to get a premiere women's cricket tournament in South Africa.

"It has to start somewhere, this is only the second edition. It'll grow from three days, maybe to five then to two weeks," said Van Niekerk.

"Obviously we know that we're a growing nation when it comes to women's cricket, so we have to be realistic about it. I know as a cricketer it costs a lot of money, resources and I have to take my hat off to CSA to put this spectacle together."
