Proteas duo sign up for Australia's Meteors

Cape Town - Proteas women skipper Dane van Niekerk and No 1 ODI bowler Marizanne Kapp have signed for the Meteors in Australia's Women's National Cricket League.

According to the Cricket Australia website, the Meteors based in Canberra signed the Proteas pair among just three overseas players in their 14-player squad for this year's domestic 50-over competition.

Van Niekerk and Kapp have both appeared in the two editions of the Women's Big Bash League to date and helped Sydney Sixers to the WBBL|02 title. However, their involvement in the upcoming Big Bash season is yet to be confirmed.

Van Niekerk led from the front at the ICC Women's World Cup in July when she finished as the leading wicket-taker of the tournament taking 15 wickets.

The skipper averaged 10 runs per wicket and her best haul was the incredible four wickets for zero runs against West Indies during the group stages.

It was one of three four-wicket hauls for Van Niekerk, who also contributed 99 runs with the bat.

World No 1 bowler Kapp finished second in the wicket-taking tally taking 13 wickets in her seven games.

The South African pair were also named in the ICC Women's World Cup XI squad despite the Proteas failing to progress to the final after their semi-final loss to eventual winners England.
