Cape Town - Brendon McCullum said he was 'incredibly lucky' to play for New Zealand for as long as he did when he bowed out of 50-over international cricket on Monday as the Kiwis beat Australia by 55 runs to win the three-match ODI series.

The 34 year-old McCullum made his international debut in ODIs against the Aussies in January 2002 and led the Black Caps to the World Cup final last year.

McCullum said after the game on Monday: "I've been incredibly lucky to play for 14 years and represent my country and play with some great blokes and make some good friends. Not just in my own country but in other countries as well.

"Not many people get that opportunity and I want to thank everyone for supporting me and supporting this team over a long period of time.

"The memories will hold for the rest of my life."

The aggressive right-handed batsman and former wicketkeeper will sign off his international career after the two-Test series against Australia at home, starting on Friday in Wellington.
