Durban - KZN Cricket confirmed on Monday that it would not be renewing
the contract of head coach Lance Klusener, whose current contract lapses on April 30, 2016.
It was further agreed that in order to give both parties the best opportunity
to plan for the future, Klusener would hand over the coaching duties to Yashin
Ebrahim and Roger Telemachus as joint caretaker coaches for the remainder of
the Sunfoil Series.
“Lance has been a loyal servant of KZN cricket and the Sunfoil Dolphins and his
passion and loyalty to the team is unquestionable,” said Chief Executive of KZN
Cricket, Pete de Wet.
“That has made the decision taken by the Board all the
more difficult”.
“The Board felt that the time was right to refresh the team dynamic to enable
this talented group of players to reach the next level, and agreed that a new
coach was an integral part of that process,” he added.
Klusener, one of the most successful all-rounder’s to have played for South
Africa and the Durban based franchise, said that he was sad to be leaving the
job, but wished the team well in the future.
“I am obviously very disappointed and surprised with the Board's decision,
considering the progress of the team in the last four years,” said Klusener.
“I am a proud son of the soil of KwaZulu-Natal and I have relished every moment
of coaching the Sunfoil Dolphins,” said Klusener.
“I have no doubt that the squad has the talent to win more trophies like the
Ram Slam title we won in the 2013/14 season, and while I won’t be their coach
they will all know that I will be backing them all the way.”
“It has been an exciting journey with KZN Cricket and the Dolphins and after
enjoying my playing days here it has been rewarding for me personally to be
able to contribute to the Sunfoil Dolphins as their head coach,” he added.
The Dolphins resume their Sunfoil Series campaign on March 3 when they
take on the Warriors in East London.
The 2013/14 Ram Slam T20 Challenge title was the only major trophy Klusener won with the Durban-based franchise since joining in 2012.
This season, the Dolphins lost in the final of that competition while they finished second-from-bottom in the Momentum One Day Cup.
They are currently fourth in the four-day Sunfoil Series, although the season is still at the halfway point.
Klusener played 49 Tests and 171 ODIs for the Proteas between 1996 and 2004.
