Cape Town - Herschelle Gibbs' bat that he used to smash six sixes in an over in a group match at the 2007 Cricket World Cup has been auctioned for nearly R300 000.

Playing against the Netherlands in their group encounter at St Kitts and Nevis, Gibbs became the first batsman to record the feat in international cricket.

Gibbs' record in the Caribbean came off unfortunate Netherlands spinner Daan van Bunge.

At the 2007 World Twenty20, India's Yuvraj Singh bludgeoned England's Stuart Broad for six sixes in an over.

According to ABC News, the bat used by Gibbs sold at an auction in Adelaide for A$27 000 (R280 673).

The bat was reportedly bought by an anonymous buyer.

"It was the first time a player hit six sixes in one over in a one-day international game, it was a world first," said the auctioneer Marc du Plessis, as quoted by ABC News.

"It came with two shirts. It came with Herschelle Gibbs' shirt that he wore while he was batting.

"Daan van Bunge was the bowler and it came with his shirt as well. On that it actually had the inscription 'they were only small sixes', which I thought was brilliant," he said.

"Both of these items came with paperwork. The Herschelle Gibbs one came with a letter from Herschelle himself."

The former South African batsman finished on 72 and helped South Africa to a comfortable 221-run victory.

South Africa went on to lose in the semi-finals to eventual winners, Australia.
