Gary Kirsten lands 2018 IPL gig

Cape Town - Former Proteas opening batsman and coach Gary Kirsten has been named batting coach for the Royal Challengers Bangalore ahead of this year's IPL.

It is not the first time that Kirsten has been a part of the game's most lucrative tournament, having previously coached the Delhi Daredevils.

The 50-year-old also coached India to the 2011 Cricket World Cup title before he coached his own national side until 2013.

RCB have also announced that Indian veteran Ashish Nehra will serve as their bowling coach for 2018 while former New Zealand spinner Daniel Vettori will continue as head coach.

The RCB are considered one of the most star-studded sides in the IPL, and last year they boasted the top order batting trio of Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers.

Despite having that firepower, the side under-performed throughout the tournament and managed just three wins all season to finish bottom of the log.

Kirsten, meanwhile, played in 101 Test matches and 185 ODIs for the Proteas between 1993 and 2004. He still has the highest ever score by a South African in ODI cricket - a knock of 188* against the United Arab Emirates at the 1996 World Cup.
