Galle - England gave debuts to opener Rory Burns and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes as they won the toss and chose to bat on the first day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Tuesday.

Surrey left-hander Burns will have the tough job of replacing Alistair Cook, who retired this year, as opener.

Foakes, Burns's Surrey team-mate, gets his chance behind the stumps as regular wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow recovers from an ankle injury.

Rain is predicted to cause trouble during the match after a weather-disrupted ODI series, which England won 3-1.

Teams:

Sri Lanka

Dimuth Karunaratne, Kaushal Silva, Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal (captain), Angelo Mathews, Niroshan Dickwella (wicketkeeper), Dhananjaya de Silva, Dilruwan Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Suranga Lakmal, Rangana Herath

England

Keaton Jennings, Rory Burns, Moeen Ali, Joe Root (captain), Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler, Ben Foakes (wicketkeeper), Sam Curran, Adil Rashid, Jack Leach, James Anderson

Umpires: Chris Gaffaney (NZL), Marais Erasmus (RSA)
