Donald appointed SA Over 50s CWC coach

Cape Town - Proteas legend Allan Donald has been appointed as head coach of the South African team for next year's Over 50s Cricket World Cup.

The 2020 Over 50s Cricket World Cup is set to be held in Cape Town from March 11-24.

Donald, who is a former Proteas bowling coach, is expected to name his 16-man squad later this month.

"I would have loved to play but a shoulder injury has ruled me out," said Donald, according to a Veterans Cricket Association of South Africa press release.

"But coaching the team is a fantastic consolation prize and I'm really looking forward to getting involved with the guys and building up towards another World Cup in South Africa. It's an opportunity I never thought I would get.

"I urge the public to come and watch the tournament and get behind the 'old boys' who will be doing the country proud. From what I've seen so far, there's plenty of skill and fitness left in our over-50s!"

Donald, who was inducted in the ICC Hall of Fame this year, played 72 Tests and 164 ODIs for South Africa.

The hosts are drawn in Division B alongside Pakistan, England, Wales, India and Namibia.

Defending champions Australia are in Division A alongside New Zealand, Canada, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe.

The tournament will take place at clubs, school and university grounds throughout the Western Cape with the final being held at Newlands Cricket Stadium.

South African legends Graeme Pollock and Barry Richards will also be attending the tournament as ambassadors.
