Dolphins bowler Pillans signs with Yorkshire

Cape Town - South African bowler Mathew Pillans has signed on Thursday a three-year contract to join English county club Yorkshire.

According to Yorkshire's official website, the Dolphins bowler is in the midst of a seven-year qualification period to play for England.

Pillans, who will join Yorkshire in October on an ancestral visa, will not be classed as an overseas player and qualifies for England in 2023.

A Pretorian by birth, Pillans has taken 129 wickets in 40 first-class matches and this season he has played in nine T20 Blast matches for Surrey.

Pillans has taken 41 wickets in 23 matches for Surrey's first and second teams in all cricket this summer.

He has only played eight Championship matches since swapping the Dolphins for Surrey in 2016, with four of those on loan at Leicestershire last year.

The 27-year-old has expressed his interest in representing England at international level.

"As soon as I qualify for England, I want to be up to that standard," said Pillans, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"That's a long-term goal, though. My number one objective is just to improve my game as much as I can and be the best cricketer that I can be.

"I'm coming into another talented changing room, so hopefully I can continue to learn and add to the party," he said.
