Sydney - Redbacks bowling guru Rob Cassell believes that Joe Mennie has earned a shot at Test cricket and should make his debut this summer against either South Africa or Pakistan.
Mennie was named in the squad for the first Test against South Africa but missed out on the starting XI with Peter Siddle preferred to back up Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.
The 27-year-old quick will jet back from Perth to Adelaide to feature in South Australia's Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania but Cassell feels he has something to offer the Baggy Green.
Cassell said: “Joe is resilient and his stock ball is dangerous enough at Test level, hopefully he gets a call-up.
"(He) is ready for the next level, you know what you are going to get. I would be pushing for Joe.”
Mennie was handed an ODI debut during Australia's disastrous tour of South Africa earlier this year but Cassell feels this shouldn't count against him.
The former seamer said: “It was a tough tour for bowlers and South African coach Russell Domingo said to me the pitches were unbelievably good for batting. It was a really tough initiation for Joe and Franky (Daniel Worrall)."
