Nottingham – The English cricket team’s preparations for the Twenty20 World Tournament was disrupted after Kevin Pietersen was unable to participate in a fitness training exercise with his teammates.
The home team is already without its most versatile player, Andrew Flintoff. If Pietersen is also unable to play, England will struggle to win the tournament, which begins on Friday.
Pietersen recently missed the one-day series against the West Indies due to an Achilles tendon injury, but it was expected that he would be ready for the Twenty20 event.
Pietersen on Sunday did not take part in the fitness exercise in Loughborough.
While the rest of the team was tested, Pietersen sat next to the field.
England will on Friday play against the Netherlands at Lord’s in the T20 tournament’s opening match. The Netherlands might not pose the greatest danger to the English, but they will need their best players when they take on Pakistan on Sunday.
Pietersen is the one English player who is feared by opponents as he is able to hit to pieces any bowling attack.
Although he did struggle to make his mark in the recent Indian Premier League series in South Africa, he was believed to be reaching better form.
With the Ashes series against Australia looming, some experts feel that no chances should be taken with key players like Pietersen and Flintoff.
Paul Collingwood, the English T20 captain, told the London Evening Standard that Pietersen was “just about fit”.
But it spoke volumes when the star batsman did not take part in the training exercise.
