Philander wins top CSA award

2012-06-06 22:38

Johannesburg - Proteas seamer Vernon Philander was named South African Cricketer of the Year on Wednesday following a sensational entry into Test cricket during the 2011-12 season.

Philander, 26, took 51 wickets in seven Tests at an average of 14.15. He took five or more wickets in an innings on six occasions and twice claimed 10 wickets in a match.

The Cape Cobras bowler was mainly responsible for bowling out Australia for 47 in his debut Test in Cape Town last November, taking five for 15.

He also topped South Africa's bowling averages in all three Test series in which he played - against Australia, Sri Lanka and New Zealand.

Philander, who also won the Test Cricketer and Fans’ Cricketer of the Year awards, proved the ideal foil to Dale Steyn, the world's No 1 ranked fast bowler, bowling a tight line at a lively pace and making the ball move in both directions through the air and off the seam.

AB de Villiers was named one-day international cricketer of the year after scoring 475 runs at an average of 158.33 with a strike rate of 116.13 in his first season as South Africa's limited-overs captain.

Hard-hitting opening batsman Richard Levi collected the Twenty20 player of the year award for his innings of 117 not out off 51 balls against New Zealand in Hamilton.

He set world records by scoring his century off 45 balls and hitting 13 sixes.

Philander is a very fine bowler, where was he all these years??

      gareth.jones.7771 - 2012-06-06 23:45

From what I understand he didn't do too well when he played first time around, so he went back and worked on it, now he's awesome!

  • Ken - 2012-06-06 23:16

Well done Vernon!...from a players prospective the future of cricket in RSA looks brilliant! sort out the crooked administrators!!

  • gareth.jones.7771 - 2012-06-06 23:43

Well deserved! He's made great progress!

  • Zimbobwe - 2012-06-07 00:01

I saw were trying to push their agenda by saying AB is poised to win the Cricketer of the Year award before the nominations. Bunch of bloody agents!!! Well done Verny. If only you could be given a chance in one day cricket like Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel. Yourself and Lonwabo will make a deadly combination but we know why you won't be given a chance.

      gareth.jones.7771 - 2012-06-07 00:10

      He was against Sri Lanka

      Ian - 2012-06-07 07:51

doos, why is everything about colour with you, its because of rubbish like you that this country cant move forward, go back to zimbobwe with your moronic attitude

      tim.kilpin - 2012-06-07 08:16

Cannot believe you are such a turkey - get a life you loserl

      Michaele - 2012-06-07 08:45

@ Zimo (ex Rhodesia), Why will Vernaon not be given a chance? Are you too sh$t scared to say because he is not white? I'll tell you something, Zimmo, Vernon is one of the best, fast tracked bowlers RSA has seen for many a year and this is but the beginning for him. Once he has broken through all levels of crcket he will be unstoppable. Colour has jack sh&t to do with sport, you have it or you don't. If bafana bafana couching had enough courage to fill the team with talent, and not only colour, we would see their rankings improve tremendously. Stay away fro colour based insinuations, you are the racist........

      Zimbobwe - 2012-06-07 10:22

Ek se maar net die waarheid. We all know how Lonwabo has been treated by the coaches after performing so well in Australia. They wish Lonwabo didn't exist and Charl Langeveldt was the one taking the reins. Why should I go back to Zim for talking the truth???

      Ian - 2012-06-07 13:52

we have won more series than you can count, look what happened to your wonderful zimbobwean side who used to be able to hold there own but not any more, shall I tell you why, because just like the banana boys you guys are in it for yourselves, you dont operate as a team anymore, The Proteas go into a situation a s a unit, Our entire squad is deadly not just 1 or 2 players, got it yet, No, ok move on.
