Tip to chair rest of Majola DC

Johannesburg - Advocate Karel Tip will chair the remainder of the disciplinary hearing of suspended Cricket SA (CSA) chief executive Gerald Majola, The Times reported on Tuesday.

Tip, a labour, constitutional and administrative law specialist, was appointed by the Johannesburg Bar Council on Friday following the withdrawal of advocate John Myburgh.

After a preliminary hearing went in favour of CSA, Majola's lawyers were going to ask Myburgh to stand down, but he withdrew last week citing it would be inappropriate for him to continue because his non-binding advisory award went against Majola.

"We are only briefing our client on Wednesday, but we are not unhappy with the appointment," Majola's lawyer, Pumezo David said on Tuesday.

"We were going to set out all our reasons for having Myburgh removed but the matter has passed now, so it is not necessary to go over it."

CSA lawyer Nicholas Preston said they too were satisfied with Tip's appointment.

"We are happy with the appointment. He is very experienced and we certainly believe he is the correct choice," Preston said.

Majola was suspended in March following the release of the Nicholson report, which found he had paid R4.7 million in bonuses was paid to CSA staff without clearance from the board or the remuneration committee.
