Tahir added to CWC squad

2011-01-10 10:23

Johannesburg - Dolphins spin bowler Imran Tahir has replaced Highveld Lions batsman Jonathan Vandiar in South Africa's preliminary 30-man Cricket World Cup squad.

"We feel that we need to widen our bowling options," Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson said in a statement on Monday.

"I have discussed the matter with Jonathan and I would like to express my gratitude to him for withdrawing gracefully. He knows he is very much part of our plans going forward."

Tahir, who was born in Lahore, Pakistan, was granted South African citizenship last month and last week was included in South Africa's one-day squad to face India.

The 31-year-old took 15 wickets in nine matches at an average of 17.60 to help the Dolphins reach the semifinals of the MTN40 domestic competition this season.

He has taken 140 wickets at 22.74 in 96 one-day matches and 547 wickets at 24.93 in 128 first-class games.

I definitely think he is worth trying out, lets be honest long hop Harris could'nt turn a tap let alone a cricket ball. As far as including him in the WC sqad, would'nt it have been better idea to wait untill after the ODI's against India before making that decision ? What do the rest of you think about keeping AB as a batsman/fielder and playing Van Wyk as keeper ?

      Exoteric - 2011-01-10 10:45

I like the couldn't turn a tap comment, Tahir looks like the ral deal lets get him on.Van Wyk as wickie is also not a bad idea, AB looks a little suspect as wickie at the moment might affect his game

      Axo - 2011-01-10 10:52

You echo my thoughts on Van Wyk. No only based on his performance in in T20 but also when you take his domestic record into account, you wonder why it is taking so long to get him into the team. AB doesn't want to keep wickets and a fifty every six months is not enough to keep a person in the team. No matter how many catches you take. Van Wyk is the answer.

      snackpaz - 2011-01-10 11:40

well, contrary to popular opinion, AB's batting average has actually skyrocketed since he's become keeper..i think the last 10 odd games playing as keeper, he averaged around 75 or opposed to the mid forties as a sole batsmen. robin jackman showed the stats during the pakistan series..but i can't find them on the web...somebody back me up!

      blikkies - 2011-01-10 11:57

I don't know if we should get ahead of ourselves regarding Van Wyk. He didn't have the best MTN40 seson if you exclude the semi's and final, then again that shows some I'm just contradicting myself...but agreed AB isn't our best option for a keeper, we need someone more solid especially against spinners, as spin bowlers will play a huge role in the WC. I have another question: What will our best poxxible team be for the WC? 1. smith 2. Amla 3. Kallis 4. AB 5. Duminy 6. Miller 7. Botha 8. Mclaren 9. Parnell 10. Steyn 11. Tahir But then there's alot of question to be asked players such as Van wyk, Morne Morkel, Ingram, even Roelof van der Merwe. It's going to be difficult

      Bernadette Rudolph - 2011-01-10 13:22

I have always been a great supporter of Van Wyk and I think he must be our keeper/batsman in all forms of the game.

      waucamp - 2011-01-10 14:20

Well, i still think Mark Boucher is the best glove-man in die country. His experience as keeper and senior is vital for the WC! AB is definitely a better fielder. he saves alot of runs! Put Van Wyk in as a opener batsmen and AB as a top order batsmen. My 15man sqaud: Graeme Smith Morne van Wyk / Amla Jacques Kallis AB de Villiers JP Duminy Mark Boucher Morne Morkel Dale Steyn Wayne Parnell Lonwabo Tsotsobe Johan Botha Colin Ingram Imran Tahir David Miller/Colin Ingram Albie Morkel i saw an artical that says M van WYk will loose out, because Thami Tsolekile will take his place.

      Ringo - 2011-01-10 14:41

Here we go Snackpaz: In his career he scored 4056 runs in 109 matches, ave 45.06. As keeper in 21 ODI's , AB scored 1144 runs, ave 76.26. Not keeping he scored 2912 runs in 88 ODI's, ave 38.82. (stats from Cricinfo) I

      Vesto - 2011-01-11 15:56

Waucamp I love your squad its perfect and I agree with 90% of your comment. I would drop Albie Morkel his done nothing to earn his place.

  • Ian - 2011-01-10 10:55

    I agree totally

      Fikile - 2011-01-10 14:10

van Wyk, for Smith that settles wicky and the opener, and AB can shut up and get on with batting

      Ringo - 2011-01-10 14:52

I like your sense of humour, Fikile! Smith: 5941 runs, ave 40.14. sr 83.21 Van Wyk 195 runs, ave 32.5, sr 66.32 Did I mention that Smith actually is captain as well and 2 years younger than Morne? Reckon you will fix that by making Botha captain lol. In his whole 1st class career Morne scored 5983 runs. On what basis do you rate him higher than Graeme?

      jmokgotlhoa - 2011-01-11 08:25

      eh... with what exactly?

  • pauljansevan - 2011-01-10 11:22

It would be madness not to play Tahir, he is the only bowler in this country that can destroy teams other than Steyn, Harris is just a waste of overs giving other teams more opportunities to draw matches. Steyn and Tahir and we cannot lose matches on any wicket.

  • james.mcgillivray - 2011-01-10 11:28

Kudos to Jono Vandiar for seeing the big picture, if he can show that sort of wisdom and humility at a young age, he has a long and promising future in cricket.

      jmokgotlhoa - 2011-01-10 15:40

Most likely he did not have a choice but to accept. This is so sad. Very unfair from CSA. Whith all this pressure we are creating for him, what if Tahir turns out to be an utter failure on the international scene? I'm disappointed Andrew H!

  • Lwazi - 2011-01-10 11:39

I'd much rather see AB as a batsman/fielder, he has great presence on the outfield. I haven't watched a lot of first-class cricket but I hear Tahir is quite a prospect, pity he came over quite late.

  • Dinosaur - 2011-01-10 11:53

SA really needs a good leg spinner...

  • YoungStar - 2011-01-10 12:10

Fresh up and comer, I think he will bring something new to the squad which is just what we need. Some1 gotta tutor him in Afrikaans first....

      jovie - 2011-01-10 14:08

i would have hoped he picked it up from his time with the titans

      Tembo - 2011-01-10 17:55

Why Afrikaans ? English is fine

      marnuszwarts - 2011-01-11 15:18

Did you seriously just ask that Tembo? Obviously to discuss strategy etc without the other team understanding, which is a huge advantage for South Africa in various sports!

  • Homer - 2011-01-10 12:12

Tahir is an attacking bowler and will certainly take wickets. Morne v Wyk has to play, whether as wk or just as batsman. He is destructive against the new ball. right now SA is spoilt for choice and its going to be difficult to select 11.

      Happybloke - 2011-01-11 04:52

Van wyk looked great but what about heino Kuhn who is a Proteas and never failed where is he, Tahir will be okey , we will see if he can complete against International players.

  • Riaz - 2011-01-10 12:20

Roelof vd Merwe?? seriously?? what were the selectors thinking? surely someone else can carry the drinks around and do better than him! other than that, squad looks decent...

      DeonL - 2011-01-10 12:34

He is also an attacking bowler and low down he can hit a quick 80 from 40 balls, but he needs to get a batting coach to be effective. I will choose him anytime above Harris even in test cricket.

      BlackSwan - 2011-01-10 12:55

Please save us the day when v/d Merwe has to be in the test side - he should play for waterkloof or some other school team

      Ringo - 2011-01-10 15:01

DeonL, are you Roelof's dad or brother? The man has a 1st class hs of 81 and is yet to make a 100 even in list A games! In which situation will he hit 80 of 40? The test cricket remark is about as absurd as the 80 from 40 remark. I would rather play with Nicky Boje than with Roelof :-)

  • Rajty - 2011-01-10 12:22

    And still no Davey Jacobs....

  • BlackSwan - 2011-01-10 12:33

In India we will need a spinner to help Botha - and it is NOT Peterson or v/d Merwe - so play Tahir. Van Wyk is actually keen to play w/c and won't react like a kid whose candy has been taken away. This will probably mean that neither Miller or Ingram will play (unless Smith goes.... ) Smith, Van Wyk, Amla, Kallis, AB, Duminy, Botha, Mclaren, Parnell, Steyn, Tahir

  • sportscrazy - 2011-01-10 12:46

He will definitely bring a difference to the bowling attack especially on the sub-continent...unlike Harris that can't even turn a ball on cracked pitch.

  • The Patriot - 2011-01-10 12:49

Tahir played in the English club sides and destroyed the opposition. I think he played for Surrey but may be wrong. He took them from the bottom of the log to the finals. This boy is fantastic. Harris is a Test player not ODI's. Pair him with Botha and you'll have a good spin choice for the Asian tours.

  • Axo - 2011-01-10 12:50

The problem that Tahir poses, as Homer as pointed out, is that he is an attacking bowler. He has the talent and ability but does the SA team have the leadership to use him correctly? Whether in ODIs or Tests, it is going to require a major change in the way the spin bowler is used. Forcing him to bowl a defensive line to a defensive field would only result is us blunting our own weapon. For my money, I would still choose Botha ahead of Tahir in ODIs. His proven track record will allow us to control the middle overs and when the pitch demands it, we can always bring in Tahir for a seamer.

      jovie - 2011-01-10 14:09

agreed.... needs a mentality shift from the Captain!!!

  • mupet-killer - 2011-01-10 14:04

DREAM WORLD CUP 15 : smith(c) amla jk ab jp miller albie(if on form, a must have) botha tahir dale morne ingram parnell tsotsobe mclaren

      Sipho - 2011-01-10 16:08

My WC team would be 15 players: 1. Smith 2. Amla 3. Kallis 4. AB 5. JP 6. Van Wyk 7. Ingram 8. McLaren 9. Morkel 10. Steyn 11. Tahir Tsotsobe Parnell Botha Miller The starting 11 would win any match and the WC. Lets all pray

  • sean - 2011-01-10 14:07

@ Blikkies ...My team would be as follows : 1 Biff 2 Amla 3 Kallis 4 AB 5 Duminy 6 Ingram 7 Van Wyk 8 Botha 9 Morkel 10 Steyn 11 Tahir 8 to 11 bowl 10 over each and Kallis and Duminy to share 10 and Graeme Warne to bowl 1 or 2 if uncle Kallis does his hip lol Van Wyk to bat at 3 if biff go's early.

  • Xeeco - 2011-01-10 15:17

why pull out vandiar .... why not Rudolf!! wtf! idiots!

  • Mish - 2011-01-10 15:21

I agree with mupet-killer's selections':smith(c) amla jk ab jp miller albie(if on form, a must have) botha tahir dale morne, but i would put Parnell in for Morne because of the depth bowling. I think our teams success depends on 2 things: our ability to play spin is going to be the most crucial in determining how well we do. I think it has become very obvious that we can't dominate spin in any conditions. Secondly I think the team with the best death bowlers should do well in this competition. It seems to me that currently all of teams are not consistent when bowling at the death.

  • summersgilllayla - 2011-01-10 16:48

    1. Smith C 2. Boucher W/k 3. Parnel 4. Steyn 5. Botha 6. Kallis 7. Amla 8. Van Wyk 9. Tahir 10. Morkel 11. AB 12. Tsostobi 13. JP 14 R vd merve 15. Morkel
