Cape Town - Titans captain Martin van Jaarsveld slammed 18 runs off one over to take his side to a six wicket victory over the Cobras in their T20 Challenge match at Newlands on Sunday.

Their bowlers set the foundation for the win having restricted the Cobras to 142 for five and, in reply, the Titans reached their target with five balls to spare.

After the dismissal of Pieter Malan (48), it was not all plain sailing as the Titans got bogged down as they fell behind the required run rate.

Van Jaarsveld had started slowly and only managed seven runs off nine balls until he took on Charl Langeveldt in the 18th over.

He smashed two sixes and a four off the over, before he was caught off the fifth legal delivery of the over.

The damage was done and it was left to Farhaan Behardien (29 not out) to finish it off with a boundary.

Australian spinner Brad Hogg took 2-22, while Alistair Gray bagged 1-18.

Put in to bat, the Cobras lost three wickets inside the first six overs as Titans kept their composure and mixed it up, not allowing the batsmen to settle.

After Andrew Puttick (1) and Herschelle Gibbs (2) departed early, the leading run scorer in the competition, Stiaan van Zyl, would have been disappointed with his poor shot a couple of balls later.

Having knocking off 22 runs from 16 balls, he chose to go over the top instead of trying to rebuild the innings with Owais Shah.

His dismissal left the Cobras under pressure at 31-3.

It took a fourth-wicket stand between Shah and Dane Vilas to stabilise the situation.

They added 74 runs off 66 balls before Shah (37) pulled a short delivery from David Wiese which looked to be going for six.

Fielder Henry Davids had other ideas and had the presence of mind to jump into the air and flick the ball back to Pieter Malan who sealed the catch.

Vilas went on to make 41 while Rory Kleinveldt played a cameo 23 from 16 balls.

Slow left-armer Roelof van der Merwe impressed with bowling figures of 1-19 while Alfonso Thomas took two wickets in his second over.

It was only his last over, which went for 13, that let Thomas down as he finished with 2-32.
