Swann out of NZ Test series

Dunedin - England off-spinner Graeme Swann was ruled out of the entire three-Test series against New Zealand Wednesday and will undergo surgery on his elbow, officials said.

Swann was a surprise omission from the England side to face the Black Caps in the opening Test in Dunedin on Wednesday, with Monty Panesar taking his place.

"Unfortunately his elbow's flared up so it's a bit of a blow for us," captain Alastair Cook said after England lost the toss and were put into bat by New Zealand before rain delayed play.

"He's been for some scans in the last few days and is waiting for the results of those but clearly couldn't get through the five days."

The England Cricket Board later tweeted: "Graeme Swann has been ruled out of the entire series with New Zealand and will undergo surgery on his troublesome elbow."

James Tredwell is expected to be called in to replace the 33-year-old, who will reportedly have an operation in the United States.
