Petersen eyes SA selection?

Cape Town - Alviro Petersen took full advantage of his release from the Proteas’ Castle Lager squad to score his 23rd first-class century for the bizhub Highveld Lions on the second day of the SuperSport Series match against the Nashua Titans at Sahara Park Willowmoore on Wednesday.

With the Proteas having put up a poor batting performance in the concurrent Sunfoil Test match against Sri Lanka at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead, Petersen could not have chosen a better moment to remind the selectors of his ability.

He finished on 115 (180 balls, 15 fours and 3 sixes) and shared an opening stand of 181 in 55 overs with Stephen Cook who finished the day unbeaten on 95 (217 balls, 11 fours). The Lions will resume their first innings on 248/4 with the second new ball just three overs away.

The Titans were earlier dismissed for 354 with the young Lions leg spinner Eddie Leie returning a franchise career best return of 5/93. Wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile (two catches and a stumping) assisted him in three of the dismissals.

The log-leading Chevrolet Knights compiled a very useful 340 all out against the Sunfoil Dolphins at Chevrolet Park. The Knights’ lower order has a well established reputation for the strength of its lower order batting and they were to the fore once again doubling the total by the time the ninth wicket fell after the first five wickets had fallen for just 170 runs.

Mthokozisi Shezi, like Leie a relative newcomer to franchise cricket, took 5 wickets as did Robbie Frylinck.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras’ charge to success against all their franchise opponents ground at least to a temporary halt when they were left facing a potential deficit in the region of 100 runs in their match against the Chevrolet Warriors at Paarl.

They finished the day eight wickets down and still 107 runs in arrears.

Justin Ontong, top of the SuperSport Series averages, and JP Duminy both made half-centuries but their dismissals sparked off a collapse by the lower middle-order from 151/3 to 210/8.
