Warriors end season on a high

Cape Town - Sisanda Magala finished with eight wickets in the match as the Warriors wrapped up a resounding innings and 101-run victory over the Highveld Lions midway through day three of their Sunfoil Series clash in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

The medium-pacer, who took an outstanding 6/25 in the first innings, claimed 2/33 in the second to help bowl the visitors out for 206 at St George’s Park.

Magala’s match figures of 8/58 in 28.5 overs also earned him the man-of-the-match prize in a match that was ultimately decided by the Lions’ woeful day one 68 all out.

It meant the defending champions had all but blown their title hopes, and despite improving second time around with the bat, they suffered a heavy second defeat of the season.

There were also three wickets apiece for Andrew Birch (3/42) and Simon Harmer (3/51) on what turned out to be the final day.

The visitors had started the day on 76/4, with debutant Kagiso Rapulana (40) and top-scorer Nicky van den Bergh (52) putting on 74 for the fifth wicket.

But both were removed by Harmer, and once they fell, with it faded the bleak chances of the Lions, who could yet surrender their second position on the log depending on the outcome of the clash between the Sunfoil Dolphins and VKB Knights in Durban.

The bottom-placed Warriors, on the other hand, took 19.1 points from the game, to end the season with back-to-back victories after going winless for the first eight rounds of the campaign.
