Cape Town -  Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn has, as suspected, been ruled out of the Titans' Sunfoil Series squad for their clash against the Cape Cobras starting on Thursday in Paarl.

Steyn, who is currently on the road to recovery from a series of injury setbacks, was absent from the Titans squad named on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old has not played for the Proteas since the New Year's Test against India in January this year during which he injured his heel.

Prior to that, Steyn had been sidelined for 13 months with a shoulder injury.

Steyn will be targeting the Titans' following clash against the Knights in Centurion starting on Thursday, March 22.

This is in an effort to convince Proteas coach Ottis Gibson and the national selectors of his fitness ahead of the final Test against Australia at the Wanderers on Friday, March 30.

Steyn has taken 419 wickets in his 86 Tests to date and requires just three more scalps in order to pass Shaun Pollock as South Africa's leading all-time Test bowler.
