Shamsi edges Titans closer to victory

Cape Town - Tabraiz Shamsi claimed his second five-wicket haul of the match to take the Unlimited Titans to the brink of victory over the Warriors at stumps on the third day of their Sunfoil Series match at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

The left-arm wrist-spinner claimed 5/80, and match figures of 12/173, the second time that he has claimed 12 wickets in a match this season, as the Warriors were bowled out for 256 in their second innings, after tea, to leave them holding a lead of just 139 runs.

Titans’ openers Dean Elgar (26) and Heino Kuhn (29) then shared in an unbroken first-wicket partnership of 58 off 16 overs to leave the log-leading Titans needing just 82 runs to win the contest and to extend their lead atop the table.

The Warriors had started the day on 17/1 but they lost the wicket of Jon-Jon Smuts (19) early on before Colin Ackermann, with 72 (174 balls, 9 fours) and Yaseen Vallie (32) shared in a 75-run third-wicket stand.

Ackermann raised his fifty off 96 balls but the Warriors then went into freefall as they lost five wickets for the addition of 73 runs with Shamsi at the heart of the collapse as he removed both Ackermann and Vallie.

The hosts had slipped to 181/7 before Gihahn Cloete (33) and Sisanda Magala (24) restored some stability to the innings as they combined for an entertaining eighth-wicket partnership of 65 off 12.4 overs.

But Shamsi took centre stage once again to dismiss both batsmen with the last three wickets of the innings falling for just 10 runs.
