Mulder makes mark with maiden century

Cape Town - Wiaan Mulder struck his maiden century on day two of a Sunfoil Series clash dominated by the bat between the Highveld Lions and Knights at the Diamond Oval in Kimberley on Friday.

Just five wickets fell all day as Proteas limited overs star David Miller enjoyed a prosperous debut for his new franchise with an unbeaten 82 (104 balls, 13 fours, 1 six) that took the hosts to stumps on 241/2.

That left them trailing the visitors by 242 after they were dismissed earlier in the day for 483.

The Lions had resumed on 376/7 overnight and added just over a 100 to their total, with South Africa Under-19 captain Mulder showing his growing maturity with an attacking 104 (123 balls, 20 fours, 1 six).

The 18-year-old all-rounder, playing in just his third first-class game, has already showed his capability with the ball having taken 15 wickets in the season to date.

It was his moment with the bat on Friday as he shared in an excellent 132-run eighth-wicket stand with Bjorn Fortuin, who himself hit an attacking 65 (69 balls, 11 fours).

Mbulelo Budaza ended as the pick of the bowlers with 3/69, while Duanne Olivier took 3/101.

The Knights lost Letlotlo Sesele for a third-ball duck, but captain Theunis de Bruyn continued to flourish in his new role with a fine 91 (121 balls, 13 fours). He shared in a 128-run second wicket stand with Michael Erlank, who was unbeaten at the close on 64 (153 balls, 7 fours).

Opener Erlank and Miller, who moved to the central franchise from the Dolphins, then added an unbroken 112 to ensure the game was in the balance.
