Cape Town - Marchant de Lange led a stellar bowling display by the champion Knights as they left the Highveld Lions on the ropes at the end of day one of their Sunfoil Series clash in Kimberley on Thursday.

The fast bowler took two for 48 and was one of four bowlers to pick up two wickets each - leaving the visitors on 159 for eight before bad light forced stumps to be drawn after only 61 overs at the Diamond Oval.

Shadley van Schalkwyk (2/26), Mbulelo Budaza (2/32) and Duanne Olivier (2/47) were the others with double strikes as the fragile Lions batting again struggled.

The hosts had won the toss at the start and asked the bottom-of-the-table away team to bat first.

The Knights had them under the cosh from the outset as captain Stephen Cook was trapped leg before wicket by Olivier for one.

Omphile Ramela (4) followed to De Lange, with Reeza Hendricks next to go for 19 as Budaza struck.

Dominic Hendricks (15) and joint top-scorer Rassie van der Dussen (42) managed to add 40 for the fourth wicket, before De Lange intervened again to leave the Lions on 79 for four.

Wickets continued to fall regularly as visitors slumped to 120 for eight, before Dwaine Pretorius (42 not out) finally found support through Sean Jamison (13).

The pair put on 39 together to help the Lions cross 150, but they remained in deep trouble at the close.
