Elgar, Adams tons give Titans control

Port Elizabeth - Dean Elgar and Qaasim Adams both struck centuries to power the Unlimited Titans to an imposing 399 all out shortly before the close of play on the second day of their Sunfoil Series match against the Warriors at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.

Elgar, who began the day on 34, struck 130 (209 balls, 14 fours, 1 six), while Adams completed his second ton in as many matches by recording his best first-class score of 167 (261 balls, 21 fours).

The duo combined for a mammoth 176-run fifth-wicket partnership off 46 overs as the Titans took a 117-run lead over the Warriors on the first innings after the hosts had been bowled out for 282 on the first day of the contest.

The Warriors faced three overs in their second innings before stumps but they failed to survive unscathed until the close of play without losing a wicket as they slipped to 17/1 with Martin Walters (4) trapped LBW by left-arm wrist-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi with what turned out to the be the last ball of the day.

The day had begun reasonably well for the Warriors as paceman Sisanda Magala claimed his third wicket of the innings when he dismissed nightwatchman Marchant de Lange (11).

But the hosts had to wait until after lunch before tasting anymore success when left-arm spinner Smuts finally removed the obdurate Elgar.

Debutant paceman Anrich Nortje nabbed his second wicket of the innings when he trapped Grant Thomson (16) LBW while Mangaliso Mosehle (14), Eldred Hawken (13) and Shamsi (0) all departed in relatively quick succession before Adams was the last man out shortly before the close of play.

Magala ended the innings with 3/87 while Smuts claimed 3/38.
