Johannesburg - Calvin Savage blasted his maiden Sunfoil Series century but Reeza Hendricks replied with a key three-figure score of his own as the Highveld Lions fought back on the third day of their encounter against the Dolphins in Johannesburg on Saturday.

All-rounder Savage had previously scored three 50s in his 17 games, but went one better by blitzing exactly 100 (97 balls, 11 four, 4 sixes) in a thrilling knock at the Wanderers Stadium.

It helped the visitors, who resumed at the start on 318 for seven, end their first innings on 379 and with a healthy lead of 133. Beuran Hendricks was the pick of the bowlers with five for 86 – the 15th time in his career he had nabbed five or more wickets.

But Reeza Hendricks enjoyed a welcome return to form by responding with 112 (182 balls, 15 fours) to help the Lions close on 221 for four, ahead by 88.

Although there was still work to do to try and save the game, the home side showed good fight thanks to their leading opener’s 13th career hundred.

His veteran partner, Stephen Cook, also played an important role with 51 (112 balls, 5 fours).

Two late wickets by Prenelan Subrayen (2/7) did give the Dolphins an opening, but the in-form Rassie van der Dussen was still there on 14 not out.
