Warriors fight back to draw

Cape Town - A determined performance from the Warriors top three have denied the Cape Cobras a much-needed Sunfoil Series victory as their match at Newlands ended in a draw.

The Warriors top order of David White, Michael Price and Colin Ackermann have had a relatively lean time this season, managing a combined five fifties and one century in 16 matches prior to this game, but the trio stood up when their side needed them on Sunday.

White and Price had already carried the Warriors to 88 without loss at stumps on day three as the visitors tried to overcome a 257-run deficit, and on the fourth day they extended their partnership to 155.

White (57) settled for a defensive approach to his innings, and it took the Cobras four hours to break through those defences.

Robin Peterson was the man to do so, and he went on to deny Price (94) a century soon afterwards as he had the opener caught and bowled half an hour after lunch.

The Cobras still needed to inflict a sizeable collapse though, and Ackermann ensured that wasn’t going to happen with his unbeaten 53, which was supported by Somila Seyibokwe’s determined 19 and Colin Ingram’s 11 not out.

With Peterson (3 for 65) the only bowler to manage a wicket all day, the Cobras accepted their fate when the Warriors were 256 for three with around an hour left in the game, and shook hands on the draw.

Victory would have moved the Cobras above the Warriors, but instead they had to settle for nine points and therefore remain bottom of the table with two matches to play.
