Port Elizabeth - The Sunfoil Series match between the Warriors and the Cape Cobras ended in a draw at St. Georges Park in Port Elizabeth on Sunday, after the captains decided at tea on the fourth and final day that a result was not possible.
According to the supersport.com website, the Cobras, who went into tea with their second-innings score on 82 for four, had an early scare after lunch when Basheer Walters (10-3-33-4) claimed four wickets inside seven overs to have the visitors reeling on 42 for four, a lead of just 64.
But Justin Ontong (39 not out) and Dane Vilas (nine not out) guided the Cape side to tea without further blushes.
The Cobras had won the toss and elected to bat first on Thursday and posted a mammoth first-innings total of 526 for four declared.
Andrew Puttick top scored with his second-highest first-class score before being clean bowled by Jon-Jon Smuts (1-52).
Puttick spent just over eight hours at the crease and faced 434 balls while striking 39 boundaries and one six on his way to 241. He shared in a third-wicket partnership of 167 with Ontong (87) and then 178 for the fourth wicket with Yaseen Vallie (101 not out).
Vallie was able to reach his eighth first-class century when Ontong delayed the declaration until after tea on day two.
Simon Harmer was the most successful bowler for the home side, ending with 2-175 in 49 overs. Walters, who dismissed Ontong by having the Cobras’ captain caught by Ashwell Prince, finished with 1-83 in 22.5 overs.
The Warriors ended day two on 15 for one after Beuran Hendricks (2-74) had Michael Price (12) caught by Puttick in the slips.
The Warriors moved solidly through the third day, thanks to Prince, and when stumps was called, the home side were 384 for five, with Prince undefeated on 168.
Prince and Ryan Bailey (77) added 140 runs for the fourth wicket after David White (63) and Prince posted 97 for the third wicket.
Prince and Davy Jacobs brought up their 100-run, sixth-wicket partnership on the fourth morning in 113 minutes and off 182 balls.
But shortly thereafter, Prince decided to go after Robin Peterson (1-133) and succeeded in sending his attempted slog-sweep straight down the throat of Dane Paterson running in from deep mid-wicket.
Prince spent 455 minutes at the crease and struck 28 boundaries and three sixes off 322 balls for his 198. Jacobs moved to his 26th first-class half-century in 126 minutes with eight fours and a six, despite carrying an injury.
Ayabulela Gqamane (16) and Walters (five) spent 30 minutes each at the crease before Jacobs (60 not out) and Gurshwin Rabie (seven not out) coasted into lunch.
Paterson, who earned his first call-up to the Cobras squad after a successful stint in the lower leagues, finished with figures of 39-7-101-5, which vindicated Paul Adams’ choice.
The declaration was made by the Warriors at lunch time with their score on 504 for eight and then Walters gave the visitors the jitters.
He first removed Puttick (five) in his second over, getting a ball to nip back between bat and pad which uprooted Puttick’s middle stump.
Stiaan van Zyl (two) received a similar delivery from the right-arm seamer, only to leave the ball and see it clip the top of his off stump.
A brief 20-run partnership between Vallie (18) and Omphile Ramela (five) for the third wicket was ended when Vallie struck a short, wide delivery from Walters straight to Gqamane, fielding at point.
Ramela followed shortly thereafter, caught off Walters’ bowling in the 13th over to leave the visitors on 42 for four, a lead of just 64. But Ontong and Vilas made sure that there was to be no more drama.
The Cobras moved to the top of the Sunfoil Series log, thanks to the 6.96 points they picked up, which puts them on 35.26 points, just 0.12 points ahead of the Highveld Lions, who suffered a 10-wicket defeat to the Knights on Saturday.
The Warriors, who dropped one place on the log, picked up 6.02 points, which moves them onto 19.28, 3.56 points ahead of the Titans, who have a game in hand.
