Puttick puts Cobras on top

Cape Town - Andrew Puttick notched up a century while Stiaan van Zyl played with his usual finesse to make 91 as the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras continued to dominate their Sunfoil Series clash against the Nashua Titans at Sahara Park Newlands on Friday.

The Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras declared late on day two on 476-8, 284 runs ahead, after fine knocks from Puttick, Alistair Gray, Van Zyl and Qaasim Adams who hit 66 off 74 balls. Their opening bowlers then bagged two quick scalps to leave the Nashua Titans reeling on 15-2, still 269 runs behind at stumps on day two.

Resuming the day in a dominant position  on 132-0 after they dismissed the visitors for 192 on day one, the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras openers, Puttick and Gray,  trampled all over the Nashua Titans in the morning and stretched the opening stand to 169 before David Wiese  rattled Gray’s stumps  to send him packing after the opener had made 84.

Puttick then combined with Stiaan van Zyl to see the home side to the lunch break, with Puttick  unbeaten on 95 and Van Zyl looking steady at the other end on 31 as the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras took the lead to 31 while the Nashua Titans’ bowlers toiled in the blistering heat.

Puttick brought up his 100 just after the lunch break while Van Zyl looked fluent at the other end before Puttick was eventually dismissed by CJ de Villiers. Attempting to drive, Puttick edged the ball through to the keeper after a solid 126. Yaseen Vallie didn't last long and was dismissed for a two-ball duck off the bowling of Rowan Richards.

Van Zyl and Adams held on to the tea break with Van Zyl on 83 and Adams on 26 while the Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras extended their lead to 139.

After lunch, Van Zyl went on to make 91 before he got a thick edge to backward point, off CJ de Villiers while Adams was dismissed missing a sweep off spinner Shaun von Berg.

The tail threw the kitchen sink at the Nashua Titans bowlers. Justin Kemp chipped in with 37 off 29 balls, including three sixes off one Von Berg over, before the home side declared, shortly before the close of play.

Johann Louw and Beuran Hendricks picked up two quick wickets, dismissing Tumelo Bodibe and night watchman Tumi Masekela, as the home side continued their stranglehold on the game.
