Piedt stars in Cobras' win

Paarl - Dane Piedt’s six-wicket haul saw the Cape Cobras to a 211-run victory over the Titans at Boland Park on Sunday to bring the Sunfoil Series title within sight.

The Cobras began the final day needing eight wickets to win, and Piedt claimed four of them on his way to figures of 6-100 as the Titans were bowled out for 232 in their second innings.

With the hosts taking 19.08 points from the game and their closest rivals being held up in rain-affected draws, the Cobras opened up a healthy gap at the top of the standings to make them firm favourites to retain the title.

The Titans went into day four on 62/2, but soon lost Graeme van Buuren and Qaasim Adams in consecutive overs as they slumped to 81/4 in pursuit of a highly unlikely 444.

Although Heino Kuhn battled to a half-century to stem the Cobras tide, he was eventually stopped on 69 by Dane Paterson before Piedt dismissed Mangaliso Mosehle for 26.

Roelof van der Merwe (51) and Shaun von Berg (26) frustrated the Cobras for 20 overs thereafter, but again Piedt made the breakthrough when he bowled Van der Merwe to grab his fifth wicket of the innings.

After Juan de Villiers was caught and bowled by Travis Muller, Rory Kleinveldt bowled Von Berg and Piedt wrapped up the game with a session to spare when he dismissed Junior Dala.
