Boland - Dane Piedt capped a dramatic Sunfoil Series win for the Cape Cobras when he took a hat-trick to finish off the Dolphins at Boland Park on Sunday.
LIVE UPDATES: SA v Aus - Day 4
Piedt dismissed Keshav Maharaj, Mthokozisi Shezi and Craig Alexander with successive deliveries to claim figures of 5 for 16 in the second innings as the Dolphins were bowled out for 84 to lose by 168 runs.
The result moved the Cobras back to the top of the Sunfoil Series log as they earned 17.08 points, but the Dolphins didn’t come away too badly from the match, taking 8.34 points to stay in contention with four games to play.
Although Piedt’s hat-trick caught the eye, the real match-winner on the final day was 20-year-old debutant Travis Muller, who took 5 for 21 in the second innings to set the Cobras on their way to victory.
After Kyle Abbott picked up the last four Cobras wickets - including Andrew Puttick for 123 - to finish with match figures of 12 for 125, the Dolphins were left with a target of 253.
Divan van Wyk and Imraan Khan made a solid start to the reply, but the introduction of Muller swung the game firmly in the Cobras’ favour as the fast bowler grabbed four wickets in his opening spell.
Piedt backed that up with the wickets of David Miller and Daryn Smit to reduce the Dolphins to 59 for six, before Muller returned to have Abbott caught behind and wrap up his five-wicket haul.
That left the tail wide open, and Piedt took care of it in three balls to finish the game in spectacular fashion.
Justin Ontong was named man of the match for his 150 in the first innings, but Abbott’s return with the ball will certainly have kept him on the radar of the national selectors.
