Paterson's Sunfoil haul swells

Cape Town - Dane Paterson has added to his increasingly swollen haul of Sunfoil Series wickets, and denied Simon Harmer a second first-class century, as the Cape Cobras edged day one of their Sunfoil Series encounter with the Warriors at Newlands.

Paterson returned figures of 4 for 55 to take his tally in the competition to 35, but remarkably 24 of those have come in the seven innings since the Sunfoil Series resumed last month.

The result of his efforts was that the Warriors closed the day on 274 for eight after electing to bat first, a score that represented a superb comeback after they had slumped to 111 for six.

It was Rory Kleinveldt who did the damage up front for the Cobras, trapping both Warriors openers lbw in his opening spell, while Justin Kemp’s return to fitness saw him take his place in the Cobras side and have Colin Ackermann caught behind.

With Paterson enforcing the same fate on Somila Seyibokwe and then Colin Ingram (40), and Stiaan van Zyl getting rid of Luthando Mnyanda, the Warriors innings looked likely to go up in smoke.

However, allrounder Darryl Brown hit his third fifty in a row for the Warriors, showing excellent patience in an innings of 63 that stretched over four hours, to give Harmer the stability required to play his natural game.

Harmer duly struck 12 fours and a six on his way to 94 in 137 balls, as he and Brown put on 161 for the seventh wicket - easily eclipsing the previous Warriors record of 103 between Johan Botha and Robin Peterson against the same opponents in Paarl during the 2007/08 season.

The stand was finally broken when Paterson found some movement with the second new ball to trap Harmer lbw, and in his next over the fast bowler had Brown caught in the slips to open up the tail.

Brown’s wicket brought an end to the day because of poor light, but Paterson will be lining up the tail-enders on Friday morning as he eyes a third five-wicket haul this season.
