Johannesburg - Dane Vilas has scored a big hundred and Dane Piedt contributed 92 for the Cape Cobras, but their young attack struggled to make inroads into the Highveld Lions line-up at the Wanderers on Friday.
Vilas began the second day on 70 not out and converted it into 149, while Piedt narrowly missed out on a maiden first-class century but would have been pleased enough with his highest score in this form of the game.
The two scores allowed the Cobras to push their total from 322 for seven overnight to 544 all out as they looked to take advantage of the good batting conditions, but they then found wickets hard to come by as the Lions advanced to 111 for one.
The partnership between Vilas and Piedt ensured a long morning in the field for the unsuspecting Lions, who would have been backing themselves to wrap up the Cobras innings reasonably quickly.
Instead the pair put on 155 for the eighth wicket in just 41 overs, giving the Cobras hope of only needing to bat once.
Eddie Leie was rewarded for his long, 34-over stint with the ball when he grabbed the wickets of both batsmen, but Kagiso Rabada still finished the pick of the bowlers with 3 for 90 from 26 overs.
In the absence of Rory Kleinveldt, it was left to Dane Paterson and Travis Muller to lead the Cobras attack but neither had an impact.
Justin Kemp claimed the only wicket when he trapped Stephen Cook lbw for 19, but Rassie van der Dussen scored an unbeaten 68 to impress in his second four-day game and Temba Bavuma was 20 not out when bad light brought the close of play.
