Cape Town - The Cape Cobras and the Knights will be chasing the biggest financial prize in the history of South African domestic cricket in the final two rounds of the Sunfoil Series.
The penultimate round starts on Thursday when the Cobras play the Warriors at Newlands and the Knights play the Titans at SuperSport Park.
At the moment the Cobras top the log with 99.04 points while the Knights are hot on their heels with 94.10.
“We were thrilled when the Willowton Group recognised the value of first-class cricket and readily agreed to increase its Sunfoil brand prize monies to R2 million, with R1 million to be awarded to the champion team,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) Chief Executive, Haroon Lorgat.
“The prize money and excitement does not end with the winning team. There is also R600 000 up for grabs for the team finishing second and R200 000 for the team finishing third.
“There is much interest and lots to play for with the Dolphins in third place, less than three points ahead of the Warriors and the Highveld Lions. Even the sixth-placed Titans cannot be ignored as their last two matches are at home.
“The Sunfoil series has been interesting with monthly Sunfoil sizzler player awards worth R15 000 and the R50 000 prize for the Sunfoil Player of the Series soon to be decided.
With the Proteas Test squad undergoing a process of regeneration following the retirements of Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher, there is also plenty of incentive and future prospects for the emerging players.
“The Willowton Group is a valued CSA sponsor of both the Sunfoil home Test series as well as the four-day first class Sunfoil Series. We are indeed proud and grateful for their support of cricket in South Africa.
“Their passionate involvement right from grassroots level like the Sunfoil Education Trust and their involvement in development initiatives at both KZN Cricket Union and the Gauteng Cricket Board to the very top is indeed impressive,” concluded Lorgat.
