Sri Lanka hammer Australia

Sydney - Sri Lanka beat Australia by eight wickets at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday for their first victory in the one-day international tri-series.

Sri Lanka scored 152 for two off 24.1 overs to beat Australia, who were all out for 158, on the Duckworth-Lewis method in the rain-reduced ODI.

Sri Lanka won with 101 balls to spare for their biggest-ever ODI win over Australia in terms of balls remaining.

Skipper Mahela Jayawardene steered his side to the crushing bonus-point victory with an unbeaten knock of 61 off 67 balls, with opener Tillakaratne Dilshan hitting 45 off 41.

Kumar Sangakkara reached 10,000 career ODI runs in his innings of 30 off 29 balls.

Thisara Perera was judged man-of-the-match from among several contenders after he took two for 29 and also effected two run outs in Australia's innings.

Sri Lanka's bonus-point victory took them to within three points of tournament leaders India and only two points behind second-placed Australia.

Australia play India in the next tri-series match in Brisbane on Sunday.

Match scores: Australia 158 all out (40.5 overs); Sri Lanka 152 for 2 (24.1 overs) on the Duckworth-Lewis method.
