Theron added to ODI squad

Cape Town - Rusty Theron has been rewarded for his outstanding form against Zimbabwe and Pakistan with his inclusion in the Standard Bank Proteas ODI squad for the five-match series against Pakistan which starts at Abu Dhabi on Friday.

Theron was originally selected for the Pro20 section of the tour only.

“His selection is actually a combination of several things,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) selection convener Andrew Hudson. “With the injuries suffered by Morne Morkel, Dale Steyn and Jacques Kallis we feel it is prudent to have adequate cover in the fast bowling department.

“Rusty’s form also deserves to be rewarded. He has performed exceptionally well against Zimbabwe and during the two Pro20s against Pakistan and he will bolster the squad ahead of the congested five ODIs against Pakistan.”

Hudson added that he was delighted with the form shown by the recent additions to the Proteas’ squad. “We are going to have to make some difficult choices when everybody is fit and available and it is a nice problem to have.”

Kallis is a chance to play this weekend but Steyn’s international season will probably only start in the course of next week.

No! I think the smart thing to do is start again with a younger skipper ...

I'd keep Siya captain for now, but look to have someone else for 2027.
