The Proteas wasteful with that review...Dale Steyn convincing Smith and De Villiers to go upstairs, but Hawkeye clearly shows the ball tracking down the legside and missing leg stump by more than a ball's width.

13:52 - Dale Steyn back into the attack now, replacing the 'slippery' Philander

13:47 - Philander charging in with some serious steam, his last three deliveries have clocked in the region of 135km/h+, according to the broadcaster, either he must be bowling downhill and with the wind behind his back or the radar gun could be on the blink.

8:59 - Irfan is really angry. He even brushes shoulders with Duminy after dismissing him.

8:56 - WICKET! Duminy clean-bowled by Irfan for 7. "Koppe" had no answer to Irfan.

8:48 - SA 482/6 - still 200 behind their highest ever score of 682 achieved against England in 2003.

8:46 - Another LWB appeal. Again turned down by umpire Rod Tucker. Pakistan have no reviews left! Duminy survives. He'll be happy that over is over!

8:29 - Irfan is fuming as Smith is dropped by Akmal on 233. Shocking from the wicketkeeper! It was first slip's catch but the 'keeper decided to move to it and put it down.

8:27 - Duminy almost out LBW to Irfan. Only an inside edge saves him. Otherwise it was plumb!

8:24 - "Koppe" off the mark with a single down leg-side off Ajmal.

8:18 - WICKET! Just as I praise AB, he edges Irfan to 'keeper Akmal. He is out for 164. A great diving catch by Akmal. But how different things would have been if he had held onto the catch off AB's first ball...

8:17 - First boundary off the morning as AB beautifully drives Irfan straight down the ground.

8:12 - TAKE NOTE

This first session will be longer than normal, with lunch set to be taken at 10:30 (SA time). There will also be a hour's lunch today - the times were altered due to religious reasons on a Friday in Dubai...

This may mean that Smith could declare even before lunch, maybe a lead of 450? But I'd still go for 500 ahead.

8:12 - Slowish start by South Africa, but no real threat posed by Pakistan so far...

8:05 - Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal to bowl the second over of the day.

8:02 - This partnership (328*) is now the highest fifth-wicket stand ever against Pakistan in Tests. The previous record was held by Australia's Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who made 327 against Pakistan in Perth in 1999.

8:01 - Smith also immediately underway with a single.

8:00 - The tall (2.16m) Irfan will open proceedings to AB... AB gets off the mark immediately by cutting it away for a single.

7:59 - Smith and De Villiers have arrive on the pitch. Hopefully they took enough fluids last night to replenish as both were cramping towards the end of play yesterday.

7:48 - PITCH REPORT

Kepler Wessels has revealed a crack that has opened up a bit on the pitch - largely due to Pakistan's Mohammad Irfan
constant running onto the pitch after his follow-through. He was warned a few times by the umpires and that now looks like it will cost his team dearly.

Those cracks will be as good as gold for SA leg-spinner Imran Tahir when the Proteas bowl later on.

But Kepler also says he is surprised that the pitch hasn't deteriorated as much as he thought - and as he mentioned in yesterday's pitch report.
