Faf counting his lucky stars

Dubai - Proteas batsman, Faf du Plessis, says he is a relieved man after his Man of the Match performance against Pakistan in the third ODI at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

Du Plessis scored 55 off 60 balls along with two sharp catches to put an end to a lean spell with the bat in the ODI format.

"I feel I weigh 50 kg’s lighter after this performance," Du Plessis quipped.

"I was under pressure and as an international top-order batsman you have to make sure you produce the goods.

"I haven’t done that in the last while, so it’s really great to put in a performance."

His knock included eight boundaries, an attacking performance he feels was brought on by a positive mind-set against a world-class Pakistan bowling attack.

"The Pakistan bowlers are so good, so for me it was a case of trying to pit my skill against theirs, otherwise they are just too good," he said.

"I went out and played more attacking cricket and tried to take the game to them, luckily It came off today."

Du Plessis says the innings has boosted his confidence, after a difficult time with the bat where he averaged below 20 in his last 11 innings.

"I was quite disappointed when I got out," he said of his dismissal to Shahid Afridi.

"When you do go through a tough time you find it hard to even get 20 runs so it’s important to turn a 50 into 100 when you do get an opportunity.

"I will learn from that going into the next game but my confidence has definitely lifted."
