Cape Town – Tempers flared on the third morning of the third Test between South Africa and the West Indies at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
It’s a pity that the cricket did not produce the same excitement.
All the attention after the day’s play will focus on the incident just before lunch when Dale Steyn appeared to spit in the direction of Windies spinner Sulieman Benn.
While he appeared to miss, TV commentators Ian Bishop and Fazeer Mohammed clearly thought that New Zealand match referee Jeff Crowe would investigate the incident.
Tempers were at boiling point throughout the day’s play and Australian umpire Simon Taufel asked the players to calm down on a few occasions.
The Proteas were bowled out for 346 shortly after lunch, which gave them a lead of 115 runs on the Windies’ first innings.
Ashwell Prince was unbeaten on 78 (262 balls, 5x4).
Steyn almost bagged a hat-trick. He had Dale Richards and Narsingh Deonarine dismissed with successive deliveries in his third over, after which Shivnarine Chanderpaul edged the ball only for it to fall a few metres short of the slips.
Shortly afterwards, Steyn dismissed Chris Gayle.
Benn, who was the Windies’ best bowler by far with figures of 6/84, has a reputation for being stubborn and was sent from the field in last month’s one-day series by Gayle – his own captain – for refusing to obey his instructions to bowl over the wicket.
