Cape Town – After nine weeks on tour in the West Indies and comprehensive victories in the one-day and Test series’ against the Windies, the Proteas cricket team is on its way home to catch some soccer spirit.
The time difference in the West Indies has meant that the Proteas have watched virtually no football during their series of three Tests.
The Proteas were on the field while the football has been played and not many of them could get the daily dose of two matches on television per day.
South Africa clinched the Test series 2-0 at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on Tuesday and are set to arrive back in South Africa on Saturday.
Most of the players in the team are big football fans are keen to experience the Soccer World Cup.
The Proteas sent messages of support to Bafana Bafana and also hung a Bafana shirt in front of the dressing room on the days that the national soccer team was in action.
Proteas fast bowler Dale Steyn admitted that it was frustrating to miss out on all the footballing action.
“I have tickets for the final and am looking forward to being at Soccer City then. It’s the chance of a lifetime,” said Steyn.
Two other members of the team – Ashwell Prince and assistant coach Vincent Barnes – are also big soccer fans and can’t wait to return to South Africa to experience the tournament.
Prince was desperately looking for tickets for the final.
“Do you know where I can get tickets?” he asked during an interview.
