Cape Town - Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday welcomed the decision by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to provide live radio coverage of all matches on the Proteas’ tour of New Zealand.

The official part of the tour starts on Friday, February 17, when the Proteas play the New Zealand Black Caps in the first of three T20 International matches.

“This is very welcome news and a real boost for our vision of taking the game to all the people of South Africa and making cricket a truly national sport," commented CSA CEO Gerald Majola.

“SuperSport will be providing live television coverage and our own communications staff will be providing back-up with news updates from the Proteas’ camp and live score updates on our website and social media platforms.

“This is a very big tour for the Proteas and we know the entire country will get behind them as they endeavour to regain the No 1 position on the ICC Test rankings and retain their record of being unbeaten in away Test tours over the last six years.

“A successful Proteas tour does so much for nation building,” he concluded.

“Radio 2000 realises the importance of sport and building a proud nation, as such we have and will continue to provide the South African public with an opportunity to get behind their favourite South African teams and sportsmen,” the SABC said in a statement.

“The Proteas are a team that have represented the country with pride and as a national radio station we will bring all the live action from New Zealand into the homes of millions of South Africans who are truly 100% Protea.”

Radio 2000 station manager James Shikwambana commented: “Radio 2000 will be taking all the matches ball by ball and we are very excited about it. Part of our mandate is to carry sporting events of public interest and we will always follow the Proteas.”
