SA women level series

Mirpur - The South Africa women’s team bounced back well from the previous day’s two-wicket defeat against Bangladesh to beat them by four wickets in the second ODI at Mirpur on Friday.

Bangladesh won the toss and batted first to make a competitive total of 179 thanks to a 70- run partnership between Lata Mondal and Farzana Haque.

South Africa had struck early when Shukhtara Rahman was run out by Shandré Fritz for one at the end of the third over. The top three were kept in check as the Proteas women ensured that wickets fell at regular intervals. Mondal (52) and Haque (55) were the pick of the batters, scoring the only half-centuries of the innings and saving their side from a low total as no one else managed to get more than 14 runs.

Sunette Loubser took two wickets for 26 runs, reaching the personal milestone of 50 ODI wickets in the process. She was well supported by Shabnim Ismail who claimed two wickets for 30.

Something South Africa will look to correct is the number of extras conceded during the course of the match; 16 wides, four leg byes and three byes made for 23 extra runs most of which should have been avoided.

South Africa made a rocky start to their reply. The opening partnership was ended after only 17 runs and it was left to the middle order to save the day after Fritz, Trisha Chetty and Susan Benade were removed for 11, seven and seven respectively.

Alison Hodgkinson (33) and Marizanne Kapp spearheaded the innings recovery that saved the day, putting together a fifth-wicket partnership of 64 runs before the former was trapped lbw. Kapp (39) added 33 more runs with Dané van Nikerk (45*) to get South Africa closer to victory. Van Niekerk was the aggressor in her 50-run partnership with Shabnim Ismail (24*) to get their team home.

Bangladesh lacked the initial fire they started with in their winning performance on Thursday and could not manage to take wickets as easily although Jahanara Alam took three for 35.

The teams meet in the final match on Sunday to decide the series winner.
