London – Middle order batsman Ian Bell insists England are not imposters at the top of the world rankings despite a run of five defeats in nine Tests in 2012.
England’s innings and 12-run defeat to South Africa in the first Test at the Oval on Monday made a mockery of their lofty position in the ICC rankings.
According to the daily London Metro newspaper, Bell refutes claims his side are not worthy of being world No 1, saying: “You don’t just look at the last nine Tests, you look over the last two or three years. That’s why we are ranking No 1”.
England know their position is hanging by a thread and must find a solution ahead of the second Test at Headingley in Leeds starting on Thursday, August 2, if they are to prevent South Africa from winning the three-Test series and taking over at the top of the rankings.
