Former Proteas spinner Pat Symcox has shared a special memory of the late Hansie Cronje from all the way back in 1993.
In a video posted to his Facebook page on Thursday, Symcox told the story of how the Proteas were touring Australia that year when, on Christmas Day in Melbourne, he attended a voluntary training session.
The only other two Proteas how arrived for the session were Cronje, who was not captain at the time, and wicketkeeper Errol Stewart.
Symcox, while batting, then received the shock of his life when a delivery from Cronje broke his bat in half.
Stunned by the fact that a bowler of Cronje's pace was able to inflict such damage on his willow, Symcox then had the bat signed by both Cronje and Stewart before signing it himself.
Now, some 27 years later, that bat has a special place in his pub at home.
"What a nice little piece of memorabilia ... great memories," Symcox said.
