Cape Town - Proteas coach Ottis Gibson wanted to teach his players a valuable lesson on their recent hike to the summit of Table Mountain.

With South Africa's World Cup campaign getting underway on May 30 in the tournament opener against hosts England at The Oval, Gibson and the entire playing squad did the hike last weekend.

The coach likened the hike up the mountain to what he expected from South Africa's World Cup charge, encouraging them to not caught looking too far ahead.

"I can see some of us are looking up there and we can see the top already and we're reaching," Gibson is filmed saying during the hike.

"As soon as we're reaching, we start to get out of our bubble and maybe a mistake slips in somewhere.

"We still have to stay focused and connected from the start all the way through."

Once they had reached the summit, Gibson had more inspirational words for his charges.

"This to me signifies what the journey is all about," he said.

"The World Cup is going to be the same. All in all, the effort that you guys have put in now that has led me to believe for a long time that we're on the verge of doing something very special together."
