We speak to JP Duminy, who says he is proud of the Proteas’ 2016.
Highlight of the year:
I would definitely have to say this was our 5-0 one-day international (ODI) whitewash against Australia. We go into every series with the ambition to win, and, generally, when you achieve that early in a series, you tend to back off.
But the hunger and the determination within the team to “strive for more” were remarkable and were a great inspiration to me, personally.
Lowlight of the year:
[For me], being left out of the New Year’s Test at the beginning of the year.
A New Year’s Test is certainly one of our iconic events on the Test calendar and something one always wants to be part of.
Significant moment of the year:
Being given the No 4 spot in the Test team against New Zealand.
One always feels that batting at No 4 has quite a bit of responsibility and significance and it’s an honour to be given that responsibility.
Quinton de Kock for his knock [178 off 113 balls] against Australia in the first ODI [at Centurion].
Summary of year:
There were many ups and downs...much to reflect on and to be thankful for. I’m proud of what we have achieved this year as a team. And I believe the best is yet to come.
Unsung hero:
Kyle Abbott, always a team man. And when he’s given an opportunity, he delivers.
Look out for:
[Cobras allrounder] Jason Smith. He’s immensely talented and one to look out for in the future.
What the sport needs for Christmas:
A good victory in the Boxing Day Test match. ICC silverware in the form of the 2017 Champions Trophy would also be nice...

Wayde van Niekerk breaking the world record in the 400m at the Olympics at Rio this year.
What I’m doing for the holidays:
[I’ll be] doing day-to-day things around the house and pretending to live a normal life for a while.
