Steyn, Proteas wait for update on groin injury

Cape Town - Dale Steyn and the Proteas are awaiting news on the extent of the groin injury he picked up in England on Monday.

Steyn, who is playing for Hampshire currently, left the field mid-way through his 11th over on day two of the County Championship clash against Nottinghamshire.

At the time, it didn't seem clear what injury Steyn had picked up, but it was later confirmed to be a groin.

Sport24 has contacted Hampshire for an update, which is expected to come later on Tuesday once the injury has been assessed.

Steyn was due to go for a scan on Tuesday morning.

Now 35, Steyn has had a nightmarish run with injury over the past couple of years.

The shoulder injury he picked up in Australia in 2016 kept him out for over a year and, on his return against India at Newlands in January of this year, he picked up a heel injury.

Steyn recovered once more to play in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka last month, where he picked up just two wickets and returned his worst ever strike rate in a Test series.

He has expressed his desire to play in next year's World Cup in England, but with around 10 months to go until that tournament, another serious injury now would surely rule him out of those plans.
