Proteas to keep shining ball despite virus fears

Proteas skipper Quinton de Kock revealed that his side will still keep the ball shiny despite the ongoing concern over the coronavirus.

The global outbreak has forced multiple sporting events around the world to be either postponed or played behind closed doors.

According to the Times of India, India's count of confirmed coronavirus cases rose by 18 to 62.

However, none of the cities for the ODI series - Dharamshala, Lucknow and Kolkata - have recorded positive cases to date.

Proteas coach Mark Boucher revealed last week that South Africa could avoid the customary handshakes ahead of their three-match ODI series against India.

"Obviously with the coronavirus, we understand what's going on... Personal hygiene is a big thing," De Kock told reporters in Dharamshala on Wednesday.

Fielders in the middle have been known to shine the ball with saliva in order to promote swing. Despite its health implications, De Kock admitted that the Proteas will continue to keep the ball shiny.

"There's some fine lines, but we have sat down and it seems like both teams are healthy. We've been tested on our way in here so I think we'll still shine the ball," said De Kock.

"Our team doctors and management have made sure that we're all fit and that we don't have coronavirus. We'll still attend to that and keep the ball shiny."

The first of three ODIs is set to get underway on Thursday at 10:00 SA time.
