Millions spent on beer at Newlands

Cape Town - The South Africa v England Test at Newlands was about as festive as it gets - and sales at the beer stands reflected just that. 

Stadium management confirmed to Sport24 on Thursday that after all five days of the match, R2.84 million had been spent by thirsty spectators on beer, wine and cider alone. 

And that intake was cash only, with card transactions yet to be tallied.

1 042 50-litre kegs of Castle Draught were sold throughout the Test, which equates to 104 200 500ml pints. 

A stadium representative said that, according to his knowledge, this was the most beer ever sold at Newlands, beating the 2005 New Year's Test - also against England - when 1 020 kegs were sold. 

The English certainly appear to be the common denominator here ...

Day 1 - 301 kegs

Day 2 - 270 kegs

Day 3 - 225 kegs 

Day 4 - 161 kegs

Day 5 - 85 kegs
