Kallis on '99 CWC: It's the one that got away

Cape Town - Former Proteas all-rounder Jacques Kallis hsd revealed that South Africa's run at the 1999 Cricket World Cup could've been their best opportunity to lift the trophy.

It has been 20 years since the infamous run out between Allan Donald and Lance Klusener saw the Proteas fall one run short of victory in their semi-final against Australia.

Kallis, who was part of South Africa's 15-man squad in 1999, scored 53 in the match as South Africa tied with Steve Waugh's men at Edgbaston.

"That's always going to be the one that got away from us," Kallis told the ICC website.

"Tying Australia in a knockout was frustrating. You can't blame anyone, the batsmen should've been in, chasing that total, which was more than chaseable.

"The best cricket we played out of any of the World Cup's was that one (1999). Until we win one, people will always say that's the one that should've been ours."

Kallis, who played in five Cricket World Cup's for South Africa, tipped the 'Big Three' to make the semi-finals.

"For me, the three teams that stand out are Australia, England and India. Then it'll be a dog fight for the fourth spot, whoever takes the opportunity on the day."

The Proteas kick off their World Cup campaign on May 30 against England at The Oval.

South Africa's 2019 Cricket World Cup squad:

Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir, Rassie van der Dussen
